AND…it’s snowing! #AuthorLife doesn’t get much better!
Readers are saying such lovely things about the second in the Whispers Wood Little Clock House series and having always wanted to write a book set at Christmas I admit to having a lot of fun writing it. I even had fun researching, because, come on, Christmas! Okay, yes, I may have fallen down a few research rabbit holes and not all of the fun factoids made it into the book but to celebrate the paperback coming out today, I thought I’d share some of them for your Christmas Quiz vaults!
Oh, and have a look out for details of some fun GIVEAWAYS I’ll be doing on Facebook and Twitter at the end of this post!
- Snow is not white – it’s actually translucent. It’s the light reflecting off it that makes it look white.
- Chionophobia is the fear of snow.
- The average snowflake has a top speed of 1.7 metres per second.
- Snow globes are also known as ‘snow domes’, ‘snowstorms’, ‘snow scenes’ and ‘snow shakers’ and even ‘water globes’.
- Carols used to be sung all through the year and began as an English custom called wassailing, toasting neighbours to a long life.
- James Pierpont's 1857 song “Jingle Bells” was originally called “One Horse Open Sleigh” and was written for Thanksgiving.
- The bestselling Christmas single is Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”, selling over 50 million copies worldwide since 1942.
- Robins on Christmas cards started as a joke over 150 years ago when postmen used to wear read tunics and were named after them.
- The original reindeers to pull Santa’s sleigh were: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was invented by a US firm’s Christmas promotion in 1938.
- Kissing under the mistletoe is thought to come from Frigga, the Norse goddess of love, who was associated with the plant.
- Jane Austen’s book “Emma” was first published on the 23rd December 1915. How romantic!
